Replace Broken Slates

Over time you may find that Slates on your roof have broken or slipped out of position. The picture on this page shows an example that we have encountered.

Replacing broken or slipped slates can be a tricky problem due to the way that they are fixed

If there are only a few slipped slates it may be the case that the nail holes have enlarged over time and the slate has popped over its nails, if there are many slipped slates it is likely that the nails holding them in position have perished. Slates unlike tiles have no nibs to hook over the batterns beneath them and rely soley on the nails to keep them in position.

In cases such as these replacing the slipped slates may only provide a short term solution as the nails are likely to be in a similar condition thoughout the roof, It may well prove a better option to replace the roof in the long run.

However we do understand that not everyone can afford a new roof as soon as a leak presents itself and so we continue to offer this service.

In some cases where there are many slipped slates or money is tight it may prove a better temporary option to simply glue the slates back into place, there are compounds avaliable that have been formulated for this purpose

Things that can increase to cost are broken slates under a ridge or hip tile or within the valley of a roof as these slates will have been fixed in place with mortar and thus need more work to put right

We would always recommend that slates are fixed in the proper manner but are willing to explain and advise on other methods on request and give an honest opinion of there suitability for your particular problem
