GRP stands for glass reinforced plastic.

GRP fiberglass is a strong and lightweight material. Although not quite as strong as carbon fiber composites, such as those used in formula one racing, fiberglass is less brittle an much cheaper to manufacture. Applications of fiberglass include aircraft, boats, automobiles, bath tubs and enclosures, swimming pools, hot tubs, septic tanks, water tanks, roofing, pipes, cladding, casts, surfboards, and external door skins.

In comparison to bitumin felt or rubber GRP fiberglass is much easier to mold into complex shapes, if your roofing project has many details and features a GRP fiberglass system can save money on labour costs because of this trait

I also prefer the finish of a fiberglass roof when compared to rubber or felt, the fact that GRP is a liquid which is applied to a glass fiber matting means that the finished job will have a very level and uniform finish. Rubber roofs also accomplish this but to a slightly lesser extent in my opinion

GRP fiberglass also has the greatest tear resistance of the three materials, if your roof is likly to see foot traffic I would recommend GRP fiberglass over rubber or felt. The same would apply if your flat roof is bordered by the slope of slate roof as slate fragments are incredibly sharp.

As far as life expectancy, rubber roofs are often advertised as having a 50 year lifespan, GRP fiberglass, nearer 30 years and felt 20 to 25 years. Personally I have not been fitting the EPDM rubber system long enough to give a personal endorsement of the products life expectancy, I can for the felt system and I would be very surprised if the GRP fiberglass did not have a useful lifetime of 30 years plus. I offer a 15 year guarantee with every GRP fiberglass roof, the same guarantee for EPDM rubber roofs and 10 years for felt roofs.

When installing a new GRP fiberglass roof it is almost certainly necessary to remove the original roof covering. The nature of GRP fiberglass requires that new, clean boards are always installed. It may be possible in some instances to fix the new boards directly to the existing boards once the roof covering is removed to reduce waste and labor costs

What is GRP fiberglass?

GRP Fiberglass is a type of fiber reinforced plastic where the reinforcement fiber is specifically glass fiber. The glass fiber may be randomly arranged, flattened into a sheet (called a chopped strand mat), or woven into a fabric. The plastic matrix may be a thermosetting plastic – most often epoxy, polyester resin – or vinylester, or a thermoplastic.

What does GRP fiberglass look like?

A finished GRP fiberglass roof has a smooth surface similar in colour to natural gray roofing slate. IT does not contain surface granules that can eventually be lost on other materials.

How can the historical performance of GRP fiberglass be gauged?

Many glassfibre laminates made during the early days in the 1940s are still in use today. Extensive testing carried out by manufacturers claim to demonstrated the life expectancy of a GRP roof product to be in excess of 50 years. Tests conducted to date have shown 'no deterioration' to infrastructure or performance throughout the testing period. When used in the manufacture of boats, a GRP product applied by a specialist company can be expected to last a lifetime.

How does the performance of GRP fiberglass roof compare to a 3 layer felt roof?

A GRP fiberglass roof is more durable than a 3 layer felt system. A GRP fiberglass roof is more resistant to the ultra violet rays of the sun which is often the main factor in felt roof deterioration. GRP fiberglas is also more resistant to tearing than a felt roof. A GRP fiberglass roof will not be as negativly impacted by ponding which can occur in some flat roofs.

Does an GRP fiberglass roof require systematic maintenance or additional coatings or treatment to achieve its life expectancy?

No special coating or other surface treatment is required although the removal of debris and leaves, especially from outlets, is recommended.

What is the expected longevity of a GRP fiberglass roof?

There are many different claims by many different companies but I believe that a standard GRP roof will last for at least 30 years and I would not be at all surprised to see them function perfectly for up to 50 years and maybe even longer. especially if they are multi layered.

Can my GRP fiberglass roof be coated or painted?

I do not believe that you can paint a GRP fiberglass roof. You can, however, apply a new top coat to an existing GRP roof. You would need to sand and clean the roof first.

Is GRP fiberglass used in installations other than roofing?

Can you repair a GRP fiberglass roof?

A GRP fiberglass roof is easier to repair than a felt roof but slightly more difficult than a rubber roof. You would need to sand and clean the area to be repaired and then add new matting, resin and/or topcoat as required.

What are the available thicknesses of GRP fiberglass chopped strand matting?

Chopped strand matting is usually sold at 300, 450, 600 and 900 gsm. This signifies the weight of resin the matting will hold per square meter. 450 gsm is the standard thickness for most applications. I would suggest 2 layers at 450 gsm if you require a more robust solution.
