Flat roof in EPDM Rubber.

Epdm rubber is a type of synthetic rubber with a wide range of applications.

The main properties of EPDM are its outstanding heat, ozone, and weather resistance. The resistance to polar substances and steam are also good. It has excellent electrical insulating properties. It has good resistance to ketones, ordinary diluted acids, and alkalines.

According to wikipedia "The most common use of epdm rubber is probably in vehicles. It is used in door seals, window seals, trunk seals, and sometimes hood seals. EPDM is also used in glass-run channels, radiators, garden and appliance hose, tubing, pond liners, washers, belts, electrical insulation, O-rings, solar panel heat collectors, and speaker cone surrounds. It is also used as a medium for water resistance in electrical cable-jointing and, of course, roofing membranes.

> 30 year plus life expectancy.
> U.V. stable.
> Good for low detail jobs.

If you are in need of a new flat roof EPDM rubber can offer a life expectancy of up to 50 years backed with our 15 year guarantee

We can inspect your roof and advise which system, felt, rubber or fiber glass suits your particular job. We can quote for all three and give you the information to make an informed decision between the three options.

When installing a new EPDM rubber roof it is normally advisable to remove the original roof covering. The EPDM rubber membrane will be stuck down with deck adhesive which requires that new boards are always installed. It may be possible in some instances to fix the new boards directly to the existing boards once the roof covering is removed to reduce waste and labor costs

Once the new flat roofing boards are ready to work on you would look for any right angles where the flat roof meets an obstacle or termination point, such as a wall. Right angles can cause weak points, more so in felt, but the angle should still be reduced with arris rail. The result of using arris rail for the angles is more secure and also more aesthetically pleasing.

This quick video details the installation process.

The EPDM roofing membrane will come in one large sheet and is stuck down with deck adhesive with stronger contact adhesive used on all edges and details.

All edges are finished with a neat black plastic trim supplied with the membrane. Detail work is completed with flexible patches, primer and strong adhesives.

epdm rubber roof FAQ

We hope that we can answer some of your questions on epdm rubber roofs.

EPDM rubber is an elastomeric compound which is manufactured from ethylene, propylene, and diene monomer. These components are synthesized to produce a product that exhibits high ultraviolet, ozone, weathering and abrasion resistance, and exceptional low temperature flexibility. The product also shows resistance to acids, alkalis, and oxygenated solvents (ketones, esters, and alcohols).
EPDM rubber has a smooth surface similar in colour to natural gray roofing slate. IT does not contain surface granules that can eventually be lost on other materials.
With over a billion square feet of epdm rubber membrane installed worldwide, epdm has proven itself as a great solution for a wide range of waterproofing problems. This is supported by both laboratory studies and actual field installations all over the world.
  • EPDM rubber exhibits outstanding resistance to UV (ultraviolet) radiation
  • EPDM rubber exhibits exceptional resistance to thermal shock
  • EPDM rubber exhibits outstanding resistance to cyclic fatigue
  • EPDM rubber will not become brittle and will not shatter due to issues with low temperature flexibility

Factors such as expansion and contraction, ponding, moisture, thermal shock, and temperature extremes have the capacity to negitivly effect your new flat roof installation. The high and low temperature flexibility of EPDM membrane can accommodate building movement in various climatic conditions without stressing the material. Its moisture absorption resistance makes it more tolerable towards incidental ponding and deflection. EPDM membrane can withstand extreme temperature which is an important trait as temperature extremes can promote premature aging and reduce the life expectancy of a roof.
No special coating or other surface treatment is required although the removal of debris and leaves, especially from outlets, is recommended.
There are many EPDM rubber roof installations exceeding 40 years of exposure in the field under various climatic conditions. Even though it would be difficult to predict, studies claim to have shown EPDM membrane as having a potential life expectancy of 50 years.
Acrylic coatings and latex-based paint products are available that can be applied directly to a prepared EPDM surface. Preparation would normally consist of cleaning the EPDM with a pressure washer and a detergent solution or wash. The EPDM manufacturer should be contacted prior to application to ensure compatibility and continuation of warranty coverage.
EPDM has been used in various installations including pond liners, tunnels, foundations, terraces, garden roofs and vehicle components.
We offer a 15 year guarantee with our epdm rubber roof system and the life expectancy is up to 50 years.
EPDM rubber is very easily repaired. The characteristics of the membrane are such that, even after years of service and exposure to the elements, repairs and/or modifications can be accomplished very easily. Unlike other systems that can degrade or become brittle over time due to UV exposure, EPDM single-ply membrane maintains its integrity and flexibility. You would simply need to wash the epdm rubber membrane to prepare the surface which will allow new adhesive applications, and the installation of new material.
EPDM rubber comes in two thicknesses, 1.1mm and 1.5mm.
